Coraline is a stop-motion animated dark fantasy film produced by LAIKA Studio in 2009, based on the 2002 novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman. It is directed by Henry Selick and the movie has been re-released in theaters as part of LAIKA Studios’ 15-year anniversary on 14th and 15th August.
The theatrical re-release has been a box office success, earning $5 million in a limited two-day release. The version of Coraline being re-released in theatres is the same one that fans will already be familiar with. There are no additional scenes that have been spliced into the cut. However, the release is accompanied by never-before-seen footage that takes audiences behind the scenes of the creation of numerous LAIKA films, including Coraline, of course.
Screenings are held by Fathom Events in partnership with LAIKA, Shout! Along with Pandemonium Films. LAIKA, an American stop-motion animation studio has produced the move that has been responsible for such films as Kubo And The Two Strings, Missing Link, and The Boxtrolls. They also produced ParaNorman, which is coming to theaters later on Thursday, November 16th 2023.
For those who missed out on Coraline’s re-release on August 14 and 15, the film is returning to theaters for an additional two days this month. In what is being celebrated by Fathom Events as the “Coraline Encore,” the remastered version will be back in theaters on August 28 and 29.
Coraline Plot Summary
The story is about a young girl named Coraline Jones, who moves into an old, somewhat creepy apartment building with her parents. Feeling bored and neglected by her busy parents, Coraline discovers a hidden door in her new home. This door leads her to an alternate version of her reality, a parallel world that initially seems like a more exciting and enchanting version of her own life. In this other world, her “Other Mother” and “Other Father” dote on her and fulfill her desires.
However, Coraline soon realizes that this alternate reality is not as perfect as it seems. Her Other Mother and Other Father have sinister intentions, and they want to keep her trapped in their world forever. As Coraline uncovers the dark secrets of this parallel world, she must summon her courage and intelligence to save herself and her real parents.
The film “Coraline” is notable for its meticulous stop-motion animation and its slightly eerie and captivating atmosphere. The use of 3D technology added depth to the film’s visuals, making it a unique and visually engaging experience.
The movie has been praised for its dark and imaginative storytelling, as well as its themes of bravery, independence, and the importance of family. While it is a family-friendly film, it also includes elements that may be slightly unsettling for very young children, which is characteristic of Neil Gaiman’s writing style.
The movie received positive reviews from both audiences and critics for its creativity, animation, and the way it successfully balances dark and fantastical elements. It’s often considered a standout example of stop-motion animation and has gained a cult following over the years.
